Hire the right people and do the right things to keep them. When I joined this company, the financial statements reported a loss of $1,000,000 for the prior twelve months. The sales team refused to promote and sell the most profitable service offered by the company. The reason, the service team, was under-qualified, and poorly managed. The owner promoted a technician who did not have the skills to lead the group. Also, he did not want to manage the department.
I immediately recruited and hired a new manager (Chris) for the department. I witnessed the service group become profitable in within a few months. With the implementation of incentive programs, operational reporting, customer surveys, and technical training, the department was profitable. The difference between Chris and the original manager was huge. The technicians liked and respected him. They enjoyed working with him. He was open and honest with his group. Chris showed them how to be successful in the performance of their job. He acknowledged their successes and supported them to personally and professionally grow. Chris was an excellent leader.

The positive results were quick to show up with the morale of both the service and sales groups. The service technicians now took pride in their work. The salespeople were happy because they could trust the service techs. When the salespeople sold a service contract, they knew now the service department would not embarrass them with poor service. After Chris joined the organization, the salespeople were earning more commission on service contracts than selling hardware and software.
Successful Companies have a professional hiring process to find the right people and keep them.
Now my job was to take care of Chris, to keep him happy and challenged. I provided him the tools to do his job and did not let any roadblocks get in his way. Chris required very little supervision from me. My goal, compensate Chris adequately and make sure he saw a career path for the future with our company. I needed to reward his successes and support him when he came up short with anything. Another goal, I needed to make him love to come to work and enjoy every day. I needed to make him feel that he was able to provide his family with the lifestyle that they enjoyed. I owed this to Chris and every employee in the company. Chris was a superstar. He made the turnaround so much easier for me to accomplish.
