Work Should be More Fun Than Stress!

Work should be more fun than stress! When I work on a turnaround, the management team and employees are stressed. Typically, I initially tour the business with the owner. It is evident that most everyone there is under lots of stress. When a business owner hires a turnaround specialist, employees fear that he or she are going to lose their job. Knowing that my presence is stressful for everyone there, I do everything that I can do to reduce that tension. My goal is to I try to create a fun environment even though it is a turnaround client.

I believe that work should be fun! Years ago, I used to work for a boss who was a screamer. When I joined the company, 46 employees reported to me either directly or through a department manager. The screamer made the environment throughout the whole finance department stressful which was not fun. Because I was so young, I was not sure what to do to create a happy workplace for me and 46 others.

Work Should be More Fun could be a motto of a great company!

One morning, the screamer came into my office and raised his voice to me about one of my employees. I interrupted him in the middle of his rant. When that happened, I got up from my desk and closed my office door. I sat down in the chair and very calmly asked him to sit down. His face got red because he was hot. I stopped him. He sat down and looked at me. I told him to never yell at me again as long as I choose to work for that company. I shared that I did not deserve him yelling at me. Then, I told him that I would not accept it in the future. My message was if there is an issue that got him so upset, let me know. Once I know about the problem, and I will resolve it.

A few months after that interaction, he had a heart attack and retired. The president promoted me to his position. Humbly speaking, the whole culture of the finance department changed. Ever since then, I made sure that work was fun, even during a turnaround. I am a production guy, so if an employee is not productive, his or her job is in jeopardy. However, if you are productive and doing your job, you should be able to have fun at work.

More fun less stress! When I stress at work, I lose all my creativity and productivity.

I know if I am happy and having fun, I am very creative and can pump out the work. A happy worker is a productive worker plus a pleasant working environment reduces employee turnover. Also, if you are a “screamer,” the best thing for you to do is retire! Good luck!
